NYS Security Guard Training Requirements

We know the process of becoming a New York State licensed security guard can seem like a daunting task. That’s why we’re to help!

The first step in your journey through this process is to take the 8 hour pre-assignment course. This course provides students with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard.

At ICUSPI security guard training school this course is taught by instructor Ken Sheen. Mr. Sheen is a retired security director with over 25 years of experience. He’s worked with multiple corporate and local companies and knows the ins and outs of this industry. At the conclusion of this course students will have covered topics such as the roles of a security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct.

NYS Registration & Fees

Once you have completed your 8 hour pre-assignment security guard training course, you must register with the NYS Department of State. To do this you must submit an application and proof of completion of the 8 hour training class, the application is a $36.00 fee. Along with the application, NYS requires electronic fingerprinting for every potential security guard. This is also a $100.00 required fee. All of these fees are required by New York State and have no connection with your security guard training. ICU Security & Private Investigations will help you every step of the way to ensure you get everything completed.

Additional Security Guard Training

After going through the registration process New York State also requires the 16 Hour On-the-Job Training course. This course can be taken before employment, but it is typically taken after one is already actively working for a security company. The 16 hour course only needs to be taken once. However, in order to maintain an active security guard license NYS requires that the 8 Hour Annual In-Service Training Course be taken every year as long as your actively working as a security guard.

Eligible Exceptions

Are you currently employed as a police or correctional officer? Individuals who already have experience in law enforcement may be eligible to receive their security guard license without having to go through many of the above requirements. Contact us for more information.

Individuals looking for careers in Armed Security must hold a valid NYS pistol license and are required to take the 47 Hour Firearms Training Course.
